Courtney's parents separated at the age of seven and Courtney was able to spend time with each parent at different stages. She has an older sister Jennifer who works as an executive in the field of advertising. She was a graduate in 1985 of Tamalpais High School, Mill Valley California. In high school, she also performed at Mill Valley's Ensemble Theater Company of Mill Valley.
